La vocce del Presidente

Aloha to all our Members and Friends,

We had our first comp of the year and boy o boy the surf gods were against us again.  We made the call to change the comp to Sunday as the forecasts were looking good but when we come there the big swell didn’t come.

Anyway the call was made by contest director Kingie to forge ahead so we put the first victims in the surf.  I know the conditions were not good and the wind didn’t help but I must say I was impressed with the level of surfing on display.  Everybody went out there and surfed to the best of their abilities.

I would like to thank Andrew Forrest and Mark Dewhurst for their efforts on the day for keeping the comp going, Tui for the lights and the camp fire and everybody who stepped in to judge and help out, it is much appreciated.

I also liked the display of old mal’s and new boards on the beach during the comp made me feel like in the sixties.

A other positive fact that I and the vice pres saw on the first comp was that we have about 10 new members signed up for the year.  To all the new members welcome we hope to give you a lot of surf satisfaction. It made us all pleased to see new members going out there and rip the waves.

We want to direct you more to our website.  So please go to ://maladiction.webs.com/ for all the latest about your club.

Last but not least we have been getting a lot of interest on the summer classic competition so again if you want a entry form mail the hammer on kevin.hemmerijckx@gmail.com and complete it and send it back by 19th of December 2009. We have already received two completed forms so people are eager to surf in this fantastic event.

And a reminder to you all to come and cheer  for your club on the 7th of November for the Soul vs Maladiction Team titles.

So keep on going to our website, keep on being involved and we will do our best to make it a surftastic year for you.

First comp 2009-2010–  25/10/09 El presidentes surf fantasia – The Pines

Surf report brought to you by cow number 413.

I open up my eyes in my paddock as I do everyday and have fresh bite of grass and rip one out while eating the lovely grass.  As I wonder down I have a look at that great big drinking basin, from which I am not allowed to drink.  All was quiet and well not to many two legged animals around.

Suddenly all these cars and vans arrive and take over the yellow grass area not far away from my gate.  I hear music, laughing and shouting.  A little two legged animals is asking all the other animals to cast of their skin and change to a black skin, weird critters these animals.

After they put on their black skin they go on flat tree trunks and swim in the big blue basin.  They seem to have fun.  I keep on watching them as they pee against my fence, and change from black skin to a other skin and eat sticks.

I liked the music these animals play and some of us danced in the paddock.

Was a fun day and by late evening they were all gone leaving us cows alone to mooh and rip one out….

Aloha to all our Members and Friends,

The new season is coming upon us.  During the long break I saw a lot of yiz in the water and we certainly had a good couple of surfs at our favourite breaks.

We held our first committee meeting and we are going to have a busy and exiting year ahead of us. We will need all your help to set up the comps and judge in order to make everything a success.

During the committee meeting it was decided that we are moving ahead with the times so we purchased a top notch laptop for the club and a digital underwater camera.

The laptop will allow us to finally store all our historical information in one place, do our accounting in a more efficient way, download all the pictures we have taken during the comps and update the website directly with the new pictures. All of this to get you all more involved.  We would appreciate if you all could confirm your e-mail details at the first competition because we want to move more towards internet communication with our members.

The camera we bought so we can upload the pictures taken from every comp direct on our website so you have some proof of the heroics you performed.

The next big thing we decided for this year is to bring back the summer classic as a two day event open to all clubs.  It is a charity event this year were a Classic Malibu board will be auctioned of on top of other goodies and treats. All of the proceedings will go to a local juvenile diabetes foundation.  We felt it was about time that we give something back to the community. The Summer classic will take place on the 16th and 17th of January 2010.  Entry forms will be mailed out this week as spaces are limited. A special flyer and entry form will be send to you where all the details of  the events which will take place on that day are included.

On top of all our club comps, we will also organize the mal team titles this year.  It is back at our side this year so hopefully we can bring back the titles where they belong.

Last but not least I am sad to day that our Vice-president Rob Armstrong has resigned as he is leaving the area.  Rob is going to train to become a chopper pilot with the Australian Army and after his training he will fly choppers in Afghanistan.  Thanks a lot for all that you have done Rob, you were a blessing for the club and a very good operator.  All the  best to you and keep well.  Kev Hammer has been chosen as the new vice president and he will combine both his role of Club secretary and Vice president.

So keep on going to our website, keep on being involved and we will do our best to make it a surftastic year for you.

Club presentation 2008-2009 Season–  20th June 2009- Mornington Golf Club

Final club event of the year was done in style.  We all gathered at the Mornington Golf Club for our annual presentation.

We had a very good turnout from current club members and old club members and ex presidents.  The best of the Mornington peninsula of longboard surfing was all there. We also had visitors from the West Coast, the president of Soul Brian Tucker and a couple of their club members also joined us in the festivities and had a couple of frosties with us.

The food was splendid, the drinks flowed plenty overall a very good experience.  The presentations were done swiftly, the guys on the microphones were funny and reminded us what a great season we had, all in all a other splendid event.

Hi to all our Members and Friends,

It has been busy month for the club.  We had a surf comp in the middle of March where Maladiction board riders have shown that they are indeed sons of the home of the brave surfers.

We had changing weather conditions all day from nice to windy to bloody storm conditions.  You name it all surfers went out there and gave it a go for which my many thanks and respect.

On top of this we joined the Victorian club challenge hosted by Soul where we showed the westies that the surfers of the east or the Mongols of the east are a rare kind of super styling, hard partying, fun loving long board surfers.  You can find a report below in the letter.

And top of the bill,  a gentle reminder to you all that the next competition is on Saturday 25th of April which will be the “ANZAC Surf Special”, meeting at 7.00 in the morning at the Pines with a lot of give away’s.

See you in the next competition

Club sec hasn’t received the end results yet but we will make it up to you in the next newsletter.  Just to keep you in suspense…..

Results of the Soul Victorian team long board titles on the 28th of March 2009.

What a wonderfull day it was.  Nice waves, nice weather and very well organized by Soul, for which a big thank you from all the Malediction team riders to Soul’s president Brian Tucker and his committee members.

All Malediction surfers surfed really well, a very good effort from all the bhoys.

Results of the day were the following:

  1. South coast
  2. Soul
  3. Point  Lonsdale
  4. Maledcition

It was a very tight affair, all 4 teams were very close to each other.  At the end there was only 8 points between the first team and the last.

After the competition we all went down to the presso and we partied hard on the tunes of the band with Soul members.

And the day after the Mongols of the east ruled the waves at Point impossible showing the Westies that the sons of the East can surf, party hard, and get involved big time.  So overall moral winner MALEDICTION……

Poseidon and the weather gods must be against us because as you all know we had to cancel the last competition because of the rain and the wind. I would like to thank Steve King and other committee members for kindly offering to talk to the troops and help out.

This month is a busy month for the club. We have been approached again by Toorak Girls College, in order to run a surf competition for them on the 26th of March, something we as a club like to get involved in.  It shows our support to the cause and of course helps the club funds. There is also a Surfari planned to the west coast where Maladiction club will compete with other teams, details of this surfari can be found in this newsletter

And top of the bill,  a gentle reminder to you all that the next competition is on Saturday 14th of March which will be the “Mordy Surf/GSI event ”, meeting at 7.00 in the morning at the Pines with plenty of new board to see and try out and a lot of give away’s.

Maladiction Funnies and nice to knows

Below is a transcript of a mail I received via one of our website visitors requesting some pictures from Tui from back in his old surfing days.

Hi there,

My name is Janine Whitelaw. Im from Whangarei New Zealand. I recently came across a book in the library about the history of surfing in New Zealand which featured my father , Rex Whitelaw. He was apparently good friends with Tui Wordley who submitted the pictures for the book. My Dad died when I was 8 years old ( I am now 35) and I am trying to get in touch with Tui to see if he has any photos of my Dad. I came across your site after googling his name and he apparently was an original member who set up the club in 1996/7 which was in a newsletter. Do you have any knowledge of his whereabouts and if so would you be kind enough to pass on my details to him.

Kind Regards

Janine Whitelaw

  News from the State Titles

 Aloha,

A couple of our club members competed against the best of the best in Victoria in last week-end's Victorian longboard Titles.

Well Done to all who competed especially following club members who came into the prices:

Jann Dunton, Tas Dunton, Brian Thompson, Phil Trigger,

Also in previous newsletter we forgot to laud the best performance of Maladiction Surfers in the OLD MALS Victorian titles.  John Storm was the best as he reached the finals.

Below the article from Vic longboard titles:

Victorian Longboard Titles Presented by Coopers - Sandy Ryan retains the Victorian Open Men’s Longboard Title in onshore waves at Jan Juc
Sunday, 8 March 2009

(Jan Juc, Vic – Sunday 8th March). The Victorian Longboard Titles Presented by Coopers was run this weekend in onshore waves at Jan Juc.

Defending Open Men’s champion Sandy Ryan (Phillip Island), took out the title again this year making it two in a row.

Ryan was challenged considerably during the final however, with Adam Lynch (Highton) holding the lead for most of the final. Lynch was pipped at the post though with Ryan getting the score needed to take the lead.

Lynch came in second with Tas Dunton (Mt Marta) in third and Eli Curry (Phillip Island) in second.

Amazingly, Ryan surfed 3 extra heats throughout the event by entering not only the Open Mens division but also the brand new Stand Up Paddleboard division.

Stand Up Paddleboarding has become a phenomenon within the surfing community, with hundreds of surfers getting involved in the sport.

With 14 competitors getting involved in the new division, there is no doubt this particular sub-division of surfing will get stronger each year.

The eventual winner for the SUP division was Matt Lumley (Torquay), who stunned the crowds on the beach with a great display of what is possible on the Paddleboards. Lumley executed a full range of manoeuvres including huge roundhouse cutbacks and 360 spins in the shore break.

In the women’s, young surfer Phoenix Brown (Jan Juc) took out the Blue Ribbon Open Women’s Division. In similar circumstances to the Men’s, Brown overtook veteran and reigning champion Jann Dunton (Mt Martha) in the final seconds.

Dunton finised in second place with Sam Suenderman (Williamstown) in third and Gayle Renzenbrink (Pt. Lonsdale) in fourth.

Other winners included, Molly Powell (Anglesea) in the Junior Girls, Ben Considine (Barwon Heads) in the Cadet Boys, Will Cousins (Torquay) in the Junior Boys, Chey Farrell (Torquay) in the O/35 Mens, Gayle Renzenbrink (Pt. Lonsdale) in the O/35 Womens, Grant Price (Fairhaven) in the O/40 Mens, Greg Brown (Jan Juc) in the O/45 Mens, Brian Thompson (St. Andrews Beach) in the O/50 Mens, Phil Trigger (Pt. Leo) in the O/55 Mens, and Bob Smith (Jan Juc) in the O/60 Mens.

As an exciting addition to the Victorian Longboard Titles, Graham Slade (Pt. Lonsdale) has donated 3 perpetual trophies for the Open Mens and Womens and the Junior Boys and Girls Divisions.

These amazing trophies have been hand crafted by John Lane (Torquay) and will be kept in the Surfing Victoria office.

Hi to all our Members and Friends,

It was a tough call to make but it had to be made, together with the comp director Kingie, we decided to run the comp although the conditions were horrible. In the spirit of Victoria home of the brave and bloody lunatics, we decided to go for it. And going we did.

It was rough, messy, choppy and sometimes not surfable but still waves were caught and ridden and we had a couple of surprising results here and there.

At the end all the competitors gave it a go and at least went out there and tried to surf well which is really great. Well done to all competitors to give it a go and compete out there in these conditions. At least the banter and swearing was always present which makes it more fun to surf in the water.

It was again a great turnout with a new member joining the ranks named Cammie, a warm welcome 2 you. I also would like to announce that we have two new additions to our Committee, Steve Healey and Simon Duffy. Welcome to you guys and I hope you will enjoy the fun and banter with all the committee members.

Last but not least next competition is on Saturday 13th of December which will be our traditional “Summer classic”, meeting at 7.00 in the morning at the Pines with a FREE BBQ for all paid up members on the day as part of our Xmas gift to you.

See you in the next competition

Mordy Surf – 2nd Aggregate contest 15th November 2008- Report and results

The wave to far contest……

Howling winds, an early low tide, low swell and you have a recipe for a nice Victorian surf debacle. But Kingie, the man in charge was not going to be disturbed by all this. Kingie looked at the waves like a sailor scams out the sea and said to Mother Ocean “ Arrgh I accept yer challenge my beloved Ocean” and so he pulled away his eye patch and we went to the Gunnery to surf.

All the committee members jumped in to quickly set up the tent and get the comp organized. Rob did a good job of making sure we continually had people judging and tallying.

We had a new chef or should I say Chefs on the barbie, Uncle Herm and Colleen, did a splendid job and the new burgers and other delicacies were greatly appreciated by the hungry bunch of surfers.

After the fight against the ocean was over the results were announced. The usual suspects were winning their respective heats but in some heats we had some unexpected surprises, one of the results involving a previous Ozzie longboard champ….

Thanks to all who helped on the day, and those who stayed till the end to help pack up!

And an extra special thanks to our Contest Director, Kingie, who ran an excellent day.

Committee announcement regarding Alcohol and Smoking

At our last committee meeting (19/11/08) it was decided to have all future comps and events hosted by Maladiction to be alcohol and smoke free.

This is means that Maladiction will not sell alcohol at all, you may of course bring your own, but there will be no alcohol or smoking around the official Maladiction area during comps.

This decision was derived after consultation with our insurance providers, as Maladiction do have a "Duty Of Care" to members and we were in breach against the Vic. Liquor Act.

This means can still have a good time and be responsible club members.

Crescent 2009 Dates

The new Contest Director for the Crescent Heads Classic, Warwick Latta, rang to tell us the dates for the 2009 Crescent Classic. It will run from Wednesday to Saturday, May 27 - 30. This will allow surfers to enjoy the big 20th Anniversary Party planned for the Saturday night, and then head home on the Sunday.

The 2008 Old Mal Nationals were scheduled for Sept 6-7, but unfortunately the swell was too large, and the contest was cancelled. They did run a few heats on the Sunday at Racecourse, but it wasn’t the real deal.

The 2009 Old Mal Nationals will now we held on a Friday and Saturday, Sept 4, 5, and there will also be an Over 45s this time.

Day Seven: Saturday Aug 23, 2008-08-23

A crazy wild day for the finals. Almost no waves at daybreak, almost maxed out North Haven by the last final. And throughout that time a relentless sou’west wind that had to be blowing at 50 knots. At times it was impossible to paddle down the face, and surfers who succeeded then had large up-face chops to deal with.

Mordy Surf – 1st Aggregate contest 18th of October - Report and results

The surf gods were smiling on us on the day. Swell forecasts were good and weather was good. Excellent surfing was once again the order of the day. With an in-between beachies/bay swell the gunnery was providing the most promising waves around. There were plenty of contestable waves to be had all day, making it very hard for the judges.

After the crowd of non-competitors was cleared from the contest zone, and the new beautiful tents were set up we were good to go.

It was again a great turnout with a lot of new members competing in all divisions. It was good to see a lot of new faces judging and giving the tallying a go. The food on the barby was great the beers were cold and drunk plenty, raffle prices were flying out of the door, in short all competitors went home with at least something.

Thanks to all who helped on the day, and those who stayed till the end to help pack up!

And an extra special thanks to our Contest Director, Andy Carter, who ran an excellent day.
